Join us in celebrating NATIONAL SEED SWAP DAY by attending the Fourth Winter Annual Seed Swap hosted by the Cleveland Seed Bank. The event is free and open to all!

Come and swap heirloom seeds, rhizomes, roots, and tubers with other gardeners across our bioregion. Learn, network and prepare for the gardening season ahead. Connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about saving seeds and sharing their seed stories!

We will provide envelopes, labels, markers and seed saving knowledge. Everyone will leave with seeds, new garden friends and a renewed enthusiasm for seed saving!

No seeds required! We’ll be bringing seeds with us for those who may not have seeds of their own to swap. Feel like you need to bring something? We will have a collection box for food items to donate to a local food pantry.

Also, bring your sourdough starters, cheese and yogurt cultures, kefir grains and kombucha scoby to share.

Icabod Flewellen African American Museum Builder 100th Birthday Commemoration

East Cleveland Public Library and the Friends of the East Cleveland Public Library will be commemorating the 100th birthday of Icabod Flewellen of “Father of African American Museums”, Wednesday, July 6, 2016, 4pm-6pm at the East Cleveland Public Library, 14101 Euclid Ave, East Cleveland, OH 44112. This event is open to the public. Cake will be served while it lasts.

Icabod Flewellen was once considered the father of African American Museums because of his belief and passion regarding providing African and African American history and accomplishments to everyone. When he was discarded from the army in 1945 he believed that a museum needed to be built in Cleveland. From 1953 until 1999 he collected material that told the African and African American story.

Mr. Flewellen’s papers, pictures and books are now in an archive at the East Cleveland Public Library. It tells the story of his life, the beginnings of his dream of a museum and other unknown African and African American historical information.

Event speakers will include Flewellen Family members, Greg L. Reese, former director of East Cleveland Public Library, Frances Caldwell Cleveland African American Museum and others who have associated with Icabod Flewellen.
The event will also include displays of material from the Flewellen Collection as well as the opportunity for those who have worked or had an encounter with Icabod Flewellen to tell their story on camera which will be preserved in digital format in the Flewellen Collection Archive.

Local Food Mondays

This is a networking event, held the first Monday of every month, for anyone and everyone involved in our Local Food Movement. If you’re a gardener, a farmer, a producer, a chef, a retailer, a buyer or an eater of local food you are already involved, so come meet and learn about people on a similar mission. We usually have 1-3 speakers, talking about the good work they’re doing in the community and educating us on how to do it ourselves. A 45 second fast pitch for anyone looking to announce an event or ask for help. Free appetizers courtesy of Great Lakes Brewing Company and a cash bar. There will also be a 50/50 raffle beginning in July. 50% of the proceeds go to the winner and the other 50% will be used to purchase local merchandise which we will raffle off during the next Local Food Monday’s event.
